Lofts at Merchants Row
Merchants Row involved the renovation and conversion of three existing downtown historic buildings into 16 loft apartments of varying sizes and with differing amenities. The buildings are immediately adjacent to one another and located just across the street from the famous Peabody Hotel. Two of the buildings share a common facade, across four stories, that is highly transparent with oversized double-hung windows and large transoms above. Its slender cast iron columns are very elegant as is the highly ornate cornice at the roof. The third building is a full story shorter than its neighbors and features a more subdued facade of brick with traditional wood windows. Although downplayed, its facade is equally appreciated for its subtle beauty.
All three building facades were laboriously restored to near-original condition. They present an elegant and traditional face to the project, while the lofts within offer an unabashedly modern interior. Featuring both one- and two-bedroom units, the lofts show off the building’s tall ceilings, large windows, and beautiful brickwork to offer residents a raw, yet sophisticated urban dwelling.
