Memphis Grand Carousel
The Children’s Museum of Memphis acquired the historic Memphis Grand Carousel. After investing in a $1 million restoration of the carousel, the museum required a permanent facility in which to house the valued asset. The new addition to the museum offers a glazed pavilion positioned along Central Avenue with nearly 360° views both in and out. Capped with a striking roof based on proportions of original Dentzel carousel pavilions of the early 1900s, the facility strikes a balance between the classic roof form and modern, contemporary detailing. The exposed timbers of the structure coupled with concrete columns and an abundance of glazing serve as a sophisticated backdrop allowing the carousel to shine as the star of the space.
In addition to the carousel pavilion, the project also included the addition of a large banquet hall capable of seating over 300 people with a catering kitchen as well as abundance of pre-function space. These spaces, along with required service spaces, served as the means to connect the new carousel pavilion with the two pre-existing WWII armory buildings that house the museum.
