Millington Fire Station
Millington Fire Station No.2 replaces an older facility that had reached the end of its service. As a drive-thru type, the new station features three large apparatus bays with doors on both the front and rear of the structure for ease in maneuvering the large and heavy trucks. Fully glazed doors provide an abundance of natural daylight within the bays while the large volume of space provides ample room to service the ladders and other equipment requiring greater vertical clearance.
A smaller volume serves the residential side of the station where accommodations are reserved for three shifts of seven firefighters each. Within the large bunk room, each firefighter is afforded their own semi-private sleep space and wardrobe. Battalion Chiefs have a private sleep room and office. Common spaces are open and bright, featuring large floor-to-ceiling windows that not only allow for ample daylighting, but also contribute to the notion of openness and a community-friendly station where the general public is welcomed. The large kitchen, dining room, and living room are all housed within one, large open space. Such an arrangement promotes comradery among the shifts. Additional spaces include a fully glazed fitness room, large pantry for each shift, nursing room, and rear covered porch. Plan arrangement and room adjacencies maximize efficient flow and movement within the station, allowing for the fastest response times out of the station.
