House in Brighton
House in Brighton is a house renovation and addition for a couple with two kids located in rural farmland outside of a small town. The design began as a small renovation for a home on a sizable amount of land. Initially, the project scope involved the renovation of ground floor spaces such as the living room, kitchen, and master suite. However, the project grew into a major addition and renovation of the entire house. The design involved the challenge of removing significant walls on the ground floor and then restructuring the floor structure to accommodate the absence of those walls, resulting in an open floor plan. The project also involved removing the front porch, portions of the roof, exterior walls, and then reinstalling a new, larger front porch with its own roof. Sizable dormers were added to the second floor to admit more daylight into the bedrooms and also provide more usable floor space to the bedrooms.
The existing house was gutted to the wood framing, requiring the redesign and installation of all new interior finishes. The project also included a major addition to the house, involving a new dining room and much larger living room. Positioned on the corner of the house, the living room is a taller volume with an abundance of windows taking advantage of views onto the beautiful property and allowing more daylight. In addition to interior spaces being completely renovated, the exterior received an equal amount of updates. The exterior of the house was stripped down to the sheathing and reclad in new siding and brick veneer. The existing roof was replaced with a metal roof. Hollie Steele can be credited for the interiors, they were finished with very contemporary materials in a minimalist aesthetic. White and natural wood dominate the interiors, along with dark, stone floors. Likewise, the exterior retained the image of a farmhouse, but with much more use of contemporary materials, detailing, and colors.
